No cost and no commitment — come and see the room first.

The studio room in daylight: white-painted brick, exposed black beams, a mixing desk under the window, an upright piano and guitars hanging on the wall.

Why here

Four things that make this different from the usual arrangement.

  • A professional studio, not a front room

Lessons happen in a working recording space with proper monitors, real instruments and no washing machine going in the next room. It sounds different, and children notice.

  • Taught by a working producer

Josh English produces and releases his own music for a living. Your child isn't learning from a textbook — they're learning from someone who does this every day of the week.

  • Parents welcome in the room

You're always welcome to stay and watch the lesson. Plenty of parents do — there's a sofa.

  • All ages, all levels

Complete beginners are genuinely welcome, and so are adults picking it back up after twenty years off. Nobody starts good at this.

Who's teaching

Josh English

Josh is a professional music producer and runs The Studio at Hewell Park. Guitar teaching is something he does alongside the recording work, in the same room, with the same gear.

That's the whole idea. A lesson here isn't half an hour of scales in a spare bedroom — it's half an hour somewhere that makes a child feel like they're actually in the music business. It turns out that's a very effective way to get someone to practise.

Parents are welcome to stay for the lesson, and for younger children he'd rather you did.

What parents say

5 out of 5 stars

Honestly, such a great experience working with Josh! My daughter’s sessions have been amazing — he’s super patient, really chilled, and just so good at what he does. The atmosphere is always relaxed and creative, which makes it easy for her to feel comfortable and perform her best. You can tell Josh genuinely cares about the sound and the artist. Couldn’t recommend him enough!

Questions parents actually ask

What age do you take from?

Six and up. Around six is when most children's hands are big enough to hold a chord shape down on a smaller-sized guitar, and when they can concentrate for a full half hour. If your child is younger and keen, get in touch anyway and Josh will tell you honestly whether it's worth waiting a little while.

Does my child need their own guitar?

Yes — please bring a guitar to every lesson, including the taster. It's the one they'll be practising on at home, so it's the one worth learning on.

If you haven't bought one yet, don't spend a lot: a beginner guitar in the right size is all a new student needs. Younger children usually need a smaller half- or three-quarter-size guitar rather than a full-size one. If you're not sure what to get, ask Josh before you buy and he'll point you in the right direction.

Can I stay during the lesson?

Yes, always. There's a sofa in the room and plenty of parents sit in, particularly for the first few weeks and with younger children. You're never asked to wait in the car.

What if they don't enjoy it?

Then you stop, and that's genuinely fine. The taster lesson is free precisely so you can find that out without having paid for anything. There's no contract and no notice period — if it isn't working, tell Josh and that's the end of it.

Do you teach adults too?

Yes. Complete beginners in their forties, and people coming back to it after twenty years away, are both very welcome. Same price, same free taster.

What if we need to miss a week?

Then you miss it, and you don't pay for it. Holidays, illness, a clash with a school play — you only ever pay for the lessons you actually come to. There's no charge for skipping a week and no term fees to lose.

A quick message to Josh as early as you can is appreciated, so the slot doesn't sit empty.
